Welcome back to the story! When we left the characters they had arrived in Luxor, near the Valley of the Kings and they were due to sneak off to return the jar as soon as possible. Some of you have written your own versions of what would happen next, but let’s see what Emma Carroll thinks.

Comprehension questions for Chapter 16 How much have you understood? Remember to refer back to the text to find the answers to these questions. You can write your answers on any piece of paper at home, or discuss them with someone but your answers must be in full sentences. My answers are on the next slide. 1. Why did Tulip not wake Lil? Do you think this was the right decision? 2. Why wouldn’t Lil be able to rest any longer? 3. The girls don’t trust Mr Carter. Do you? Why? 4. How did Liv feel upon arrival at the Valley of the Kings? How was this different to how Oz felt? 5. What was being in the sandstorm like? 6. Why does the boy shout at the girls?
Here are the answers I would give the questions set. I have written my answer in blue and my explanation of how I know think this is in green. 1. Why did Tulip not wake Lil? Do you think this was the right decision? Tulip did not wake Lil up because she knew that Lil needed to rest. I think this was the right decision because Lil was tired from the journey and they had a big challenge ahead of them so needed energy. Page 2 and my own opinion. 2. Why wouldn’t Lil be able to rest any longer? Lil couldn’t rest any longer because she was desperate to return the jar to the tomb as soon as possible. My understanding of Lil. 3. The girls don’t trust Mr Carter. Do you? Why? This is your opinion. I think lots of people are telling them not to trust him! 4. How did Liv feel upon arrival at the Valley of the Kings? How was this different to how Oz felt? When they arrived at the Valley of the Kings, Lil felt a sense of dread and uncomfortable. This was different to Oz, who felt very excited and wanted to draw it all. Pages 5-6. 5. What was being in the sandstorm like? Being in the sandstorm felt scary and horrible. Sand was everywhere which was uncomfortable and the children couldn’t see anything. This is my understanding of the description from page 7. 6. Why does the boy shout at the girls? The boy shouts at the girls because he thinks that they are just like the archaeologists, coming over to where he lives and thinking they can do whatever they want, without understanding the place. Page 10-11.
