Detector installation status All 3 TileCal cylinders were assembled. The barrel was moved to z 0 and connected to services in November/December 2005 The gap, crack and MBTS scintillators were installed before the summer. The EBC and EBA are now at a distance of 3m from the Barrel. Expected to connect services to have services connected to EBA by December. 5 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06
Some history since last LHCC CR Between Nov-March Between March and June Systematically testing the LVPS FE system using the full data-taking chain, going through commissioning properly. Had to work on optimising the LVPS installation and trimming and to cope with instabilities (at the FE/LVPS i/f level or at the FE level) Elaborated a lot the procedures for detector commissioning Very recently Installation of modified, safe LVPS and improvements for noise. More BE, using the RODs as a tool for commissioning. Between July and September Barrel connected to services LVPS installed and DCS progressing for LV Exercised the commissioning testing suite. Long time for repairs of damaged FE from LVPS behavior. BE installation Improving things at the level of understanding LVPS/FE long term behavior. Throughout the whole year: Several integration milestones achieved Several combined technical and physics runs 6 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06
Organization and operations Commissioning teams/tasks under the commissioning coordinator: Services manufacture and QC FE maintenance and repairs Services connection and LVPS insertion Diagnostics of the FE/LVPS system. Online checks for operation Offline validation and further analysis. ABOVE ACTIVITIES TUNED by the run coordinator Decisions and status discussed in: TileCal Weekly commissioning meetings Short bi-daily meeting for planning Weekly meetings with TC for operations planning Weekly meetings with ATLAS commissioning conveners for integration planning 7 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06

Services Barrel is connected to USA15 racks since Jan-Feb 06. No problems discovered when QC-ed after routing. Only 1 spare used out of O(1000) cables for the Barrel Had to buy part of the trigger cables from another company (little delay) Central cooling was provided in April 06 (but used a temporary unit in the meantime) EBA and EBC have local cables installed Expect to finish routing and connections by the end of the month. 9 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06
FE and Power 60 LVPS in use (50% of the Barrel) 55 stable 3 tripping 2 cases of superdrawer connected problems (large voltage drops) HV system 3 SD that we can’t turn ON HV In the stable modules the level of dead channels is 1.5%. 10 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06
DCS and DSS Currently the PVSS project for TileCal Screenshot of LVPS status Databases for the LV part Handles he LVPS control and monitoring Displays/save the cooling loops status Will handle the HV information in week. Configuration DB: Storing and retrieving calibration data from the Oracle archive. Conditions DB: DCS data are stored in the Oracle archive, plan to be moving them to COOL FSM : Plan to be working beg. of December (Tile supervisor, LV part, alarms) DSS: TileCal LVPS and HVPS are switched off by the central DCS in case of emergency. 11 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06
RODs and DVS DVS tests panel All the RODs are installed For the Barrel they are used both for commissioning diagnostics and for proper data-taking. DVS tests Fast tests for FE operation checks. They are configured in the OKS DB and the answers are prompt! Have been checking routinely: Noise in digital data Response to CIS Integrator noise and linearity 12 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review Response of channels to CIS 13 Nov 06
DAQ The Tiles DAQ s/w is in very good shape well adapted to serve data-taking but also diagnostics. The RODs and the ROSs are used and data are taken and exported to castor every day for calibration and physics. Using always the most recent online TDAQ release. The integration to the ROSs is done, we are using 2 out of 4 partitions for data taking. Usual rate is 1 kHz 30 kHz have been reached in tests. Databases Detector configuration is set in OKS. OKS2COOL is used to keep a copy of this to COOL. OF coefficients can be stored to and retrieved from COOL at Point 1. 13 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review Main IGUI for run configuration 13 Nov 06

Calibration systems CIS well exercised Same for integrators calibration Cs and Laser operational for calibrations after January 2007. EM scale from testbeam is very well understood to get ready the data-taking. 15 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06

Performance Issues Stability Timing B-field data Cosmic muons 18 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06
Stability issues Integrator Gains and Pedestals Gains are stable at a level of 10-4 -10-3 at a time scale of 6 weeks (Conservative measurement, 450 channels) Gains are uniform at the level of 0.5% (precision if integrator DAC fails) Pedestals are stable at the level of 0.5-1 per mille in several hours in quiet times CIS constants for a superdrawer (45 r/o channels) Rms/Mean 0.5% for a period of 6 weeks. Analysis for all SDs is ongoing. 19 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06
Timing studies with LED We use the LED (in the absence of the laser system): To check the PMT responses To equalize the timing in each module. Time differences which are used to set the delay on each digitizer 20 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06
Study of B-field effect 1) When Barrel Toroid field ramped to 18 kA (88% of nominal field), LED runs at the plateau and runs with no field were taken, reading out the current with the integrators (statistical precision was around 0.1%). The results showed changes 1% for 8 superdrawers. 2) Measurement of the field in one of the TileCal fingers (LBC12). The value of 20 Gauss was recorded, as expected. 21 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review Full field reach 13 Nov 06
Cosmics data Since summer several combined runs with the Larg have been taken. Trigger via master-slave LTP chain Trigger provided by the TileCal coincidence boards from UC. 6/8 modules triggering, 16 read out. Used the final ROD/ROS chain Online monitoring was used for coarse or detailed quantities (e.g. pulse shapes) HLT Athena monitoring and ATLANTIS Display was also tried online. Offline analysis is ongoing. 22 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review ONLINE: Energy in a tower ONLINE! 13 Nov 06

Conclusions During this year we gained (sometimes the hard way) a much better knowledge of our system at a large scale. We developed procedures that help us certify efficiently our detector at commissioning Looking forward to enrich our system and to continue integration to the ATLAS subsystems. THANK YOU! 24 Irene Vichou, LHCC Comprehensive Review 13 Nov 06
