Writing Guidelines Consider these as writing etiquette. › Include keywords of your profession when writing about experiences › Start task statements with action words to describe duties/tasks/responsibilities › Quantify and qualify your statements – add descriptive words (adjectives) › Include outcomes of your experiences, pay particular attention to including statistics about results if possible

Writing Guidelines - Continued › Write statements, not sentences › Write no more than seven lines of continuous text; use bullets or symbols to break it up into shorter statements › Omit the articles ‘a, an, the’ whenever possible – they are filler words › Only capitalize proper nouns, e.g.: – NO: words like ‘present, current’ – YES: Titles, Names › Spell out all numbers, ten and under; all other numbers written numerically

Formatting Guidelines › DO NOT USE A RESUME TEMPLATE! › Use MSWord – easier, more flexible

Formatting Guidelines - Continued › Margins should range from .7 - 1.0” for all sides. › Font size including section headings should consistently be 10-12 points in size. › Your name on the top of the first page only should be 14-18 points in size. › Use one font style. › Line spacing can be set at single or multiple: 1.08 or 1.15” › Use tabs to place information for alignment. – How to right justify: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v Ksv-UpvsXDo – Learn all tabs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v O2ot1XZqfwk

Formatting Guidelines - Continued › Set section titles to ALL CAPS or SMALL CAPS › Don’t use bold and underline together; it can confuse applicant tracking systems. › Convert line elements to borders so you don’t have to keep readjusting them with every change. › Set font color to black. When printed, it will be easier to read. › Limit use of bulleting. › Dates should always be on the end/left. › Order entries in each section in reverse date order (most recent to least recent). › Add contact info and pagination to each page.

Formatting Section Breaks Klondike P. Bear C: 555.555.1212 E: [email protected] Home City, ST Page 2/3 Completed Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) – Continued General Medicine – continued Attended and participated in daily rounds with family medicine service Advised and provided drug information responses to family medicine service on patient therapy issues Counseled patients who recently were prescribed enoxaparin and warfarin Obtained medication histories for patients recently admitted to the service utilizing family members and community pharmacists when necessary - Created a handout for physician team detailing the numerous etiologies of druginduced nephrotoxicity and measures to prevent its development Prepared and presented eight patient-based case presentations to preceptor and peers

Language Guidelines › Check your spelling; have others review your CV. › Spell out numbers, ten and under. › Omit first person pronouns; it is assumed that this document is about you. › Action Words - Use verbs to start your task statements. You want the reader to see you in his/her mind as being ‘in action’. Googlesearch action verbs, [your career field] › Remove the words ‘a’ ‘an’ and ‘the’; they are filler words and can typically be omitted › Replace noun phrases with adjective descriptors, e.g. Change “attendance of members” to “members’ attendance”. It reads faster.

Language Guidelines - Continued › Replace one-syllable words (5th grade reading level) with more descriptive words; use a Thesaurus. › Keep text and punctuation consistent, ex: – Ohio vs. OH › Use punctuation consistently. › List both the acronym and spell out the title; it adds “keywords” to your document.
