Key terms Descriptive statistics Inferential statistics Sample Population Data Collection Data organization Data analysis
Chapter One The Nature of Probability and Statistics Definition: Statistics is the science of conducting studies to collect, organize, summarize, analyze, and draw conclusions from data.
Two key words : sample population A population is the total set of individuals, groups, objects, or events that the researcher is studying. Ex: All students in MCHS A sample is a group of some subjects selected from a population. Ex: Ten students of all students in MCHS
Descriptive Statistics It consists of a collection, organization, summarization, and presentation of data. Example: US Census Bureau collects data, organizes about the age, gender, income and then summarize the data, and then present the data in the form of charts, graphs or tables.
Inferential Statistics It tries to make the inferences from samples to populations. This uses probability. Example: The unemployment rate in the next month may decrease Cigarette smoking causes lung cancer.
Main Difference Descriptive statistics can’t be used to make generalizations for larger groups. Inferential statistics are used to draw conclusions and make predictions based on the analysis of sample.
Descriptive In the year 2008 the average age of MCHS student was 15 years 7 months The national median medical expense per person is 1052 Nine out of ten onthe-job fatalities are men. Inferential Data comes from sample but we really care most about population Drinking decaffeinated coffee can raise cholesterol levels Experts say that interest rates may soon hit top.
