Special Segments in Triangles Section 4-7

Median Median – segment drawn from the vertex of one angle of a triangle to the midpoint of the opposite side

Altitude Altitude – segment drawn from a vertex of one angle perpendicular to the opposite side

Perpendicular Bisector Perpendicular bisector – line, segment or ray that is perpendicular to a segment at its midpoint.

This can be done to the segments of a triangle Pg 155 (1-3)

Each triangle may have three of each one of the special segments drawn on it.

Theorem 4-5 and 4-6 A point is equidistant from the endpoints of the segment, if and only if the point lies on the perpendicular bisector of a segment Pg 155 (4-6)

Distance Distance from a point to a line – the length of a perpendicular segment from the point to the line

Theorem 4-7 and 4-8 A point is equidistant from the sides of an angle if and only if the point lies on the bisector of the angle. Pg 155 (8-10)
