WHAT IS ENGINEER’S TOOLSET? Engineer’s Toolset is a network management tool provided by Solarwinds that delivers an advanced collection of must-have monitoring, discovery, diagnostic, and Cisco tools. It includes a collection of powerful network management tools, all of which can be easily accessed through an innovative Workspace Studio to quickly resolve issues right from your desktop.
Solarwinds : Engineer’s Toolset Key Features Network Discovery Information is collected via ICMP and SNMP locally or on remote networks. The network discovery tool scans a single IP, IP address range, or subnet and displays network devices as they are discovered in real time, providing an immediate access to detailed information about the devices on the network.
Solarwinds : Engineer’s Toolset Key Features Performance Monitoring Provide the ability to monitor critical devices on small to midsize networks via ICMP and SNMP. Plus, this tool not only performs network monitoring on the network nodes, but also provides visual alert indicators, audible alarms and sends e-mail messages when devices fail.
Solarwinds : Engineer’s Toolset Key Features IP Address Management Determines which IP addresses are in use or not in use, and how long it has been since they have been used. The IP Address Management tool also supports SNMP to perform auto-network discovery, providing a wealth of detailed network management information.
Solarwinds : Engineer’s Toolset Key Features MIB Browsing Allows to view MIB values in different ways. It can be browsing through different MIB values on a device, display all MIB values, or find just one specific value.
Solarwinds : Engineer’s Toolset Key Features NetFlow Realtime Tool Captures and analyzes Cisco NetFlow data in real time to show you what kind of traffic is traveling through the network, where it’s coming from, and where it’s going. The flow of data is broken out by applications, conversations, domains, endpoints and protocols.
Solarwinds : Engineer’s Toolset Key Features Other useful features include:
Getting Started SNMP Communication Because Toolset takes advantage of SNMP communication to collect inventory information, all devices from which the detailed information is going to be collected must have SNMP properly configured.
Getting Started SNMP Communication Steps 1. Enable SNMP access To enable snmp access, community strings must be configured. There can be several community strings and each one can grant different form of access.
Getting Started SNMP Communication Steps 2. Enable SNMP traps For SNMP to send the information to the management station, a host must be configure, this way all traps will be sent to that specific host, in this case 192.168.1.2 using the community “public”. Finally, the traps must be turned on.
Demonstration Discovering a device Adding a dashboard: monitor the bandwidth of an interface Real time Network Traffic Viewing and comparing configurations IP Address Management Network Performance
CONCLUSION Toolset provides a rich set of applications to address virtually every network engineering challenge from configuration management and fault management, to bandwidth and network performance monitoring. Toolset is friendly enough for even the smallest networks but powerful enough to manage the largest, most complex multivendor networks.
