Medical Academy Presentation “Expert Medical Badge” Purpose of the SGAUS Medical Academy’s “Expert Medical Badge” The SGAUS Expert Medical Badge (EMB) and the associated SGAUS “Field Casualty Course” (FCC) are designed to encourage medical personnel who volunteer in State Defense Forces to develop first aid and first responder skills necessary to care for State Defense Force personnel in the field and to care for civilian casualties likely to be encountered in shelters and/or State Defense Force deployments.

Medical Academy Presentation “Expert Medical Badge” What the Proposed “Expert Medical Badge” Will Not Represent The Expert Medical Badge is not Formal Medical Training and is suitable only for doctors, nurses, paramedics and EMT’s. The Awarding of the Expert Medical Badge will not be a replacement for MEMS. The Awarding of the Expert Medical Badge does not carry a credentialing certification.

SGAUS Medical Academy Authoritative Approval for the Expert Medical Badge: The SGAUS Medical Committee Chairman will have final approval authority for awarding the SGAUS Expert Medical Badge (EMB). SGAUS Board 2018

Eligibility Standards for the SGAUS Expert Medical Badge: Be a member in good standing of a State Defense Force and SGAUS and have completed the requirements for the Basic MEMS Badge Be recommended by a battalion level equivalent or higher commander Complete and submit an Expert Medical Badge (EMB) application (to be developed) to Medical Academy.

Eligibility Standards for the SGAUS Expert Medical Badge (cont’d): Successfully complete the SGAUS Field Casualty Course May complete prior to other credentials Provider or Instructor Course for all medical personnel. Possess a current medical certificate, license, in respective field EMT basic or higher certificate M.D., D.O., P.A., N.P., C.R.N.A. Other Health Care Professional (e.g. Nurse, Pharmacy, Veterinary, Behavioral Health, Clinical Psychology or Clinical Social Work) Possess a current Basic Life Support (CPR) card from a nationally recognized agency (Am Heart Assn. or American Red Cross).

Eligibility Standards for the SGAUS Expert Medical Badge (cont:’d 2) Possess a current prehospital or higher trauma curriculum completion card as appropriate for specialty or support position. Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) for physicians and mid level providers. Trauma Nursing Care Course (TNCC) for nurses. Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), or Tactical Combat Casualty Care Course (TCCC) for EMTs, Paramedics, former military medics, and other health care professionals. Meet height/weight standards as outlined in the individual’s State Defense Force (SDF) regulations.

Initial Development - The most Senior Medical Unit Commander in each participating State Defense Force will appoint at least one Expert Medical Badge Coordinator to oversee the conduct of at least one annual Field Casualty Course and to ensure that candidates have met all requirements for the badge.

Initial Development - In the event no medical units exist in a state but medical personnel who work primarily in a medical occupational skill (EMT, medic, doctor, nurse etc.) are present they may forward their completed packet to the SGAUS Medical Committee Chairman for approval. If a nearby state has a program they may work with that state to take the Field Casualty Course.

Requirements to Complete the Field Casualty Course 1. Pass 6 “hands-on” skill stations selected from the lecture and course reading materials. Skills will be selected by the Course Director and revealed to the students at the skill stations. 2. Successfully complete a written examination based on the lecture materials. 3. Complete a land navigation course and Elements of SAR litter transport training (helicopter transfer)

Point of Clarification Although modeled after the US Army Tactical Combat Casualty Care Course, the course designed for State Defense Force members encountering medical scenarios more applicable to a civilian disaster. The course is designed for managing typical medical conditions encountered in adults and children following natural disasters such as floods and tornados.
