Summer School: Catch-Up (counselors) Be sure to have taken all of your required courses to graduate. Go talk to your counselor if you are unsure that you have complete everything. If you need to take summer school courses or remedial school talk to your counselor for more information. All classes will be held at Kempner High School Session I: June 11 – June 28, 2018 Session II: July 9 – 26, 2018 No classes the week of July 2 - 6, 2018; No classes on Fridays 7:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (remedial and original credit) 7:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (AP/Pre-AP)

Planning Your Summer This is it! You’re finally there. You can almost smell that diploma in your hands. But you’ve got an entire year left. These three months may seem short but can actually be quite impactful on your senior year. Be sure not to waste them! Summer school, college visits, scholarship searching, sample classes, and job shadowing are all options available for you to complete or at least analyze before you start that “last lunge” year towards a career or a respectable position in the workforce.

Be Prepared Summer may be a time for fun but your senior year is NOT. Upon coming back to school, be ready to learn and excel to be college ready!

Preparing For College Addressing Confusion and Questions

Stressing and “Senioritis” Senior year can “kill” you. if you let it. No matter how high that GPA is or how excited you are for those two off periods, this is no time to slack. Senior year is one of the most important times of your high school career. Being bombarded with scholarships and offers from universities all over the united states sounds nice, and it is, but first comes the work.

College Placement Tests The ACT (American College Test) and SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) are the two main assessments of college readiness in the United States. As a junior and rising senior, it is important to score decently on one or both of these tests. Many students find that taking each test at least twice will give a more accurate representation of your college preparation than only taking it once. Remember, this is no time to be lazy! Unless you make a pretty decent score the first time around, this is no “one and done” situation.

When Should I Apply? It is never too late to take the ACT and SAT tests. However, that doesn't give you an infinite window to play around in either. Sign up for the earliest date possible. It is recommended that juniors take one or both college placement tests over the summer since testing dates are more likely to fit a student’s schedule. If you are a senior, sign up for the earliest Fall testing date that is workable for you. SAT and ACT assessments are usually on the weekends, more specifically , saturdays. This should make it relatively easier to work into any schedule. BE ONE TIME. Don’t miss your SAT because breakfast at Chick-fil-a was more important at the time!

Financial Aid Financial Aid is extremely important and will remain important throughout your entire college experience. Whether it be grants, loans or money from parents or other sources, money is always a good thing to have, and even better when you don't have to pay it back!Be sure to apply for financial aid early. College Essays Your 1st English IV grade will be college essay prompts.Get started this summer Here is one of the boring parts of getting into your dream university: the essay. No matter how much you hate writing, don't slack on this part of the application process. Often, colleges look at your essay to gauge your roundedness both as a student and an asset to their school. It is recommended to start drafting your college essays during the summer. It is also preferred that you draft all three essay prompts. This will give you time to revise and review your essays and get them college ready.

Recommendation Letters When applying to college, you may notice that many will require recommendation letters from teachers, counselors, or other reliable sources. For many seniors, these letters can make or break a college admission. Academics is one thing, but to have someone, especially a teacher, further comment on how well-or how poorly- you behave can really impact a university’s decision. Take it as another excuse to be extra nice to ALL of your teachers.

Naviance: College SuperMatch Naviance is an incredible tool to use for almost any collegerelated purpose. One of the most valuable to you as a senior, will be SuperMatch. SuperMatch is a simple assessment that takes into account all aspects of your person, from ethnicity to hobbies to your own personal college preferences, and creates a list of colleges that would suit your individual partiality.

College Applications: ApplyTexas & CommonApp As intimidating as they may seem, college applications are actually quite simple and comprehensive if you take the time to complete them diligently. However, before you begin filling out any application, there are some things to know and to note.

Describe your family, home, neighborhood, or community, and explain how it has shaped you as a person.
