WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? AN APPRENTICESHIP IS A PROGRAM THAT TRAINS A WORKER TO BECOME SKILLED IN A PARTICULAR TRADE. APPRENTICESHIPS COMBINE HANDS ON TRAINING WITH CLASSROOM WORK TO ENSURE A WELL-ROUNDED WORKER. WE ARE 1 OF 4 ROOFING APPRENTICESHIPS IN WASHINGTON. ( SW WASHINGTON & OREGON, SPOKANE, SEATTLE, TACOMA)

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 18 years or older. Applicants are required to pay for and pass a pre-hire drug screening. The cost is 45.00. Applicants must have at least a 10th grade education. Applicants must be able perform the work of the trade- heavy lifting, climbing ladders, being on feet for long period of time etc. Applicants must have a drivers license in the state of Washington Applicants must be able to effectively communicate in English.

Preparing for a career in roofing Apprenticeships are designed to train a person in a trade or craft with little or no prior experience You may prepare yourself by: Ensuring your driver’s license is valid Obtain a reliable source of transportation Read up and be knowledgeable about the trade you are applying for. For example; If you are applying to be a roofing apprentice, know you will be expected to use tools, climb ladders and perform roofing tasks on the roof. (Fear of heights may be a barrier) Brush up on your basic math skills. Practice using hand tools, or familiarize yourself. Understand that not all trades are the same, if roofing isn’t for you, there are many other trades apprenticeships available to try.

How To Apply: Applicants may apply Monday-Friday in person from 9:00AM -1:00PM. Drug screening stops for the day at 1:30PM Applicants should bring with them: Driver’s license, Social Security card and any pay check stubs they wish to receive previous credit for. (Must be in the trade of roofing) A check or money order in the amount of 45.00 made payable to Local 153 Roofers and Waterproofers.

Next Steps: After applying, the applicant will be sent out for drug screening to a local medical facility. Once the Apprenticeship Office receives the test results, the applicant will be contacted and scheduled for an upcoming orientation. Typically within a week of application. At the orientation the applicant will complete other required paperwork from the apprenticeship and union offices. Orientation will last roughly 45 minutes start to finish Before leaving, the new apprentice will obtain a dispatch slip and will be directed to contact the contractor they’re assigned to. Work can start as early as the following morning.

We track your hours, and it is your responsibility to turn in your hours monthly by the 5 th of the month.

Roof Preparation Work/ Truck Driving/ *Newer apprentices generally work in A,C, and D* Includes: Tear off and removal of existing roof systems including insulations, ballast, vapor retarders, underlayments, and cleaning of roof or roof deck surfaces, Includes warehouse work, truck loading/unloading, and material handling not relate to actual roof system installation. Includes: Operation of company owned, or company rented vehicles including: Service Trucks, Crew Cabs, Dump Trucks, Tanker Trucks, Boom Trucks and Flat Bed Trucks. Also included is operation of kettles, tankers, forklifts, man-lifts and boom trucks. B. Sloped Roof Systems – 500 Hours Includes: Installation of all types of composition shingles, shakes, tile, and slate including all related barrier boards, ice & or water or underlayment materials, roof insulation, vented roof insulation components, integral flashing, trim, roof vents, and any accessory components related to the completion of such systems. C. Built Up and Modified Roofing Systems – 1550 Hours Includes: Standard or modified bitumen multiply built-up roofing systems, including mop applied, torch applied, cold applied, or self adhered. Also includes all work related to the installation of these systems such as installation of barrier boards, vapor retarders, slip sheets, base sheets, roof insulation, cover boards, membrane application, membrane flashing work, roof surfacing and any accessories related to the completions of such systems. D. Single – Ply Roofing Systems – 1550 Hours Includes: PVC, CPVC, CSPE, CPE, EPDM, PIB, Butyl, Plastic, TPO or modified Elastomeric sheet systems. All Work related to the installation of these systems such as slip sheets, barrier boards, roof insulation, cover boards, membrane flashings, detail, coatings, ballast materials, and any accessories related to the completion of such systems. E. Waterproofing and Damproofing – 450 Hours Includes: Installation of single or multi-layer membranes consisting of sheet applied, hot applied membranes, torch applied membranes, liquid membranes, waterproofing panel systems, cold applied elastomeric compounds applied by spray, trowel or brush, and asphalt based Damproofing. Also all work related to the installation of these systems such as preparation, priming, reinforcement flashing, product application, installation of drainage boards/mats, filter fabrics, root barriers, drainage retention boards, insulation boards, and protection boards. Also includes vegetative roof covering systems, when they are a component of the roofing or waterproofing system.

School : As an apprentice, you are required to go to school for one week out of the month for 4 months a year, for 2 years, for a total of 364 hours. In addition, you will have a one week assessment and exam to demonstrate skills and retention Once you’ve completed all school hours, you are eligible for your Journeyman card (assuming you’re at the– 5,000 work hour When – January April, one mark). week per month. Where – Clover Park Technical College Cost - Roughly, 550 a year **You are NOT paid while gong to school, it is a stipulation of your employment that you attend school. However, you MAY be eligible for unemployment during scheduled class time to help supplement financially

GRADUATION!! We have a graduation every year for all the apprentices who became a Journeyperson that year. The committee also has the apprentice of the year award, which goes to one of our graduating apprentices that is not only a well-rounded roofer, but turned their hours in on time, went to school, had little to no makeup days, was always on time, etc.

Becoming a Union Member: You may become a Local 153 Union Member after you pay off your initiation fee of 500. To help pay off your initiation, we take 0.50 an hour for each hour you work until it is paid off. Your first 1,000 hours, at .50 cents per hour, equals 500. So by your first raise, your initiation will be paid off. Once initiation is paid off, you will start paying Union Dues, 50 a month and they are due by the 20th of each month. Dues can either come out of your chosen credit Union (Qualstar or IBEW) automatically when they are due, or you can bring in a money order to the Union Hall. You can fall behind on your dues easily if you aren’t paying them. Once you miss 3 months of dues, you will go suspended until “i CaNT aFfOrD mY DuEs”

Overtime: Especially during the summer, there will be plenty of OT opportunities. If you work over 40 hours that week, each hour is time and a half after that 40. If you work over 10 hours a day, each hour after the 10th hour is time and a half. Saturday is considered a regular workday. You will not get time and a half on Saturdays unless you are over your weekly 40 Every Sunday is time and a half.

Is this going to be 40 hours a week? Yes and no. The work is there weather FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: permitting; it can slow down in the summer if it rains, and you can work in the winter if its dry. How long does it take to become a Journeyperson? Participants of the Pierce County Roofers may Journey out in as little as 3 1/2 , but may go longer depending on hours worked. Do we have to go to school? Yes. Attending scheduled RSI training is a requirement of this program

Total of at least 5,000 hours of on the job training.(OJT) Total of at least 364 hours of Related Supplemental Instruction. (RSI) Apprentices attend Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, WA. Earning over 22 transferable college credits. For every 1,000 hours worked you are eligible for a step/pay increase. At 1,000 hours worked, your union initiation is paid and you become a union member. 55%, 60%, and 70% apprentices earn an additional 10.41 in fringe benefits and 80%, 90%, and Journeyperson earns an additional 15.71 to their base pay. 15 local contractors to choose from.
