Introduction In general, Marines promoted into new ranks must accept increasing amounts of responsibility. Remember that rank is the actual title of seniority held, while grade is the letter/number combination representing the pay grade for that rank.

Officers Within officer ranks, there are four categories. These categories are based on experience and provide different levels of leadership. Warrant officers are technical officer specialists who perform duties that require extensive knowledge, training, and experience with particular systems or equipment.

Officers Company grade officers are the junior officers of the Corps. Field grade officers provide the mid-level leadership of the Corps. General officers are the senior leadership of the Corps.
