ICAHN Fellowship Project: Employee Engagement: Strategies for Maximum Employee Empowerment and Satisfaction Mar 4, 2024 ICAHN Fellowship Presentation 1
Employee Engagement: What’s the big deal? Simon says (Simon Sinek) no, not that Simon! – “When people are financially invested, they want a return. When people are emotionally invested, they want to CONTRIBUTE.” – Emotionally invested employees are those who are the embodiment of Employee Engagement. Mar 4, 2024 ICAHN Fellowship Presentation 2
What Are We Going To Do About This? –Memorial Hospital, Memorial Medical Clinics and Hancock Village purposely determined to approach Employee Engagement in a proactive way because we know and agree with what the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) says about it “Employee engagement has emerged as a critical driver of business success in today’s competitive marketplace.” “High levels of engagement promote retention of talent, foster customer loyalty and improve organizational performance and stakeholder value.” Mar 4, 2024 ICAHN Fellowship Presentation 3
Time to put up or shut up *We need to measure where we are now* Memorial Hospital participated in a large-scale (more than 15 hospitals participating) Employee Engagement survey in Fall of 2021. 11 categories of questions evaluated 5 Engagement Index Drivers – These were devised for both corporate focus and department specific focus (for departments with 5 or more employees) Mar 4, 2024 ICAHN Fellowship Presentation 4
“Survey Says ” (How did we do?) To be honest Pretty well! * You want stats, we got stats! 1.80% response rate 2.Engagement index: 88% favorable 3.Leadership Effectiveness: 87% favorable 4.Favorable responses considerably higher than the average of all respondents Mar 4, 2024 ICAHN Fellowship Presentation 5
No “resting on laurels” allowed! *The Ad Hoc Committee delivers the goods!* - Ad hoc committee created, representing all business units, to determine next steps - Ad hoc committee reviews scoring of survey. Drafts of recommended 3 Corporate Goals presented for approval - Once final drafts are edited and approved, communication occurred with all Managers/Supervisors - A well-deserved ending and hand-off occurred to the Employee Engagement Committee (with plenty of big kudos being showered upon the Ad hoc committee!) Roll out to Managers/Directors - Email and follow up WebEx Manager/Director meetings explaining and detailing 3 Corporate Goals in regard to Employee Engagement - Timelines established for Department leaders to roll out and review with team these 3 goals - Each Department asked to develop 1 stretch or focus goal - Departments expected to work with this in a thoughtful and meaningful way Mar 4, 2024 ICAHN Fellowship Presentation 7
“If you didn’t document it, it never happened!” - Managers/Directors were required to submit proof of initial rollout of departmental or corporate Employee Engagement survey results (if small department) by emailing minutes/presentation notes to HR - Managers/Directors were required to do the same for proof that they had created a stretch or focus goal to work on throughout the year for improved results - Additional follow up at monthly Department Directors meetings soliciting Directors to give updates of their activities regarding our 3 Corporate Goals as well as their team goal Mar 4, 2024 ICAHN Fellowship Presentation 8
Initial results: So far, so good! Renewed excitement and focus with employee engagement activities Specific employee-driven recruitment and retention committee created for purposeful discussion/activity on these subjects (HR not the primary driver department of this initiative) Re-tooling of employee reward/bonus programs in light of Employee Engagement Mar 4, 2024 ICAHN Fellowship Presentation 9
What’s next? Great question! - Immediate tangible forward movement: insertion of the 3 Corporate Goals into our Performance Evaluation Process (which has just launched for 2022) - Hospital standing Employee Engagement Committee continuing with the development and forward movement of Employee Engagement Corporate Goals - Continued requests for documentation of Department and Team meeting’s Employee Engagement activity (a.k.a. the “Trust Yet Verify” method ) Mar 4, 2024 ICAHN Fellowship Presentation 10
The Good Stuff: Why this works! -Increased Employee Safety -Better Customer Service -Better Employee Health -Better Quality -Happier Employees -Greater Productivity -Greater Employee Satisfaction -Higher Retention -Better Home Life -Lower Absenteeism -Greater Employee Loyalty -and a lot more! Looking to the Future (grabbing crystal ball as we speak ) Quantum Workplace has a nice quick definition of employee engagement which says it all “Employee Engagement is the strength of the mental and emotional connection employees feel toward their place of work” Leaders need to understand and help foster the strength of that connection Mar 4, 2024 ICAHN Fellowship Presentation 12
