High School Graduation Requirements (basic) 4 English credits 4 Math credits 3 Science credits 3 Social Studies credits 1 Performing Fine Arts credits 1 Health/Physical Education credits 10 Elective credits (1 of which is some type of online class) 2 High School Foreign Language (if planning on college) Total 26 Credits (28 credits for schools with block schedules)

HS Registration (the basics) If not applying to any high school, students will be assigned automatically to their districted school (based on the location of their residence) You will receive a letter from SSA S stating what high school you’re districted for with Q2 report cards You will register at your DISTRICT high school UNLESS you have been accepted into a specific program or school choice

High School Registration (continued) Counselors come to SSAS from SHS, BHS, SMA and RHS only (this usually happens in May) Parents do not attend these sessions Students are provided with registration books and forms to bring home and fill out HS Guidance Counselors return one week later to collect registration materials and schedule students. All other schools including Manatee County Schools: parents/guardians need to contact school directly for registration process

Types of High Schools/Programs Public School: open to all in that district. Others can still attend via School Choice or apply to magnet program (Booker, SHS, RHS, etc ) Charter School/Specialty School: admission by application and/or lottery process (SMA, Polytech, Pine View, etc ) Private School: must apply directly to gain admission. There is an annual tuition (Cardinal Mooney, Sarasota Christian, ODA, etc ) Magnet program: These are specialty programs within a school. Must apply to gain acceptance – can be out of district (AICE, VPA, IB, etc )

Sarasota School Choice (Open Enrolment) Parents who would like their children to attend a Sarasota County public school in 2019-2020 other than their districted school are invited to submit a school choice application Space is limited – lottery process - not first come, first serve Application window open in February – these are to be submitted by the parents/guardians directly to the Office of School Choice at the Sarasota County School Board per the instructions on the form The window to submit an application is: February 12th – March 16th 2019 Participating Schools: BHS, SHS, RHS, VHS, and NPHS

Manatee School Choice (Open Enrollment) Parents who would like their children to attend a Manatee County public school in 2019-2020 other than their districted school are invited to submit a school choice application Application window in January only for dates of January 7th 2019 – January 18th 2019 Space is limited – lottery process - not first come, first serve Completed applications turned in directly to Manatee County School Board Participating schools: Bayshore, Braden River, Lakewood Ranch, Manatee, Palmetto, and Southeast

Booker High School Visual and Performing Arts Program (VPA) – Magnet Program Rebecca Abrahamson Visual and Performing Arts Program: The VPA is an intensive, pre-professional arts program for passionate students with a talent in either the visual or performing arts. 5 Areas of Focus: Dance, Digital Film & Motion Design, Music, Theatre and Visual Art. Candidates are selected based on an audition (for performing arts) or portfolio review (for visual arts), along with a review of transcripts and letters of recommendation. The VPA audition will be in February at Booker High Theater can actually audition here at SSAS in March Students can shadow a student at Booker – See counselor’s for details or call Booker Directly

Booker High School Law Academy, & AICE – Magnet Programs Cambridge AICE Program: (can combine this with VPA) Rigorous and internationally recognized curriculum.
