Science Practice: Argumentation How to Write a Scientific Explanation C E laim - a statement/conclusion that answers the original question vidence – scientific data that supports the claim – must be sufficient and appropriate – refer to calculations, error bars, etc. R PARAGRAPH (SENTENCE) FORM easoning – justification that links the claim and the evidence – gives the “why” – relies on scientific principles (laws, definitions, concepts, processes, etc)

Mealworm Behavior Lab Day 1 Today’s Goals: 1.Read the Background 2.Complete Part 1 in your lab notebook. 3.Start Part 2 record EVERYTHING in your lab notebook Lab Notebook Use a permanent marker or pen to write your first and last name on the cover Write your class period somewhere on the cover
Lab Notebook Title and Date all labs Be organized – Use headers such as “Background” or “Part 1” or “Analysis” these will be highlighted and bolded/underlined on today’s lab – Don’t write too tiny! You have an entire notebook, use the space – Write legibly. If I can’t read it I won’t grade it – Draw pictures large enough to be able to see details when appropriate – Answer all questions in COMPLETE SENTENCES. No credit will be given for sentence fragments or single word answers (unless it says list) – Show your work for mathematical analyses
Lab Notebook Be neat – Use color or highlighters appropriately if it helps! – Write legibly – Use a ruler for straight lines – If you mess up, start over on a new page. Always include the original lab sheet or rubric in front of or behind the lab
Mealworm Behavior Lab Reminders: Read and follow all directions on your lab sheet. EVERYTHING must be written in your lab notebook. All graphs MUST be on graph-ruled paper. Come borrow some if you don’t have your notebook yet. Remember to refer to the grading rubric as you work. This will be your FIRST FORMAL grade for AP Bio!
Headings should be written in your lab notebook in the order that they appear throughout the lab. Answer these questions (a-f) in complete sentences under “Background” in your lab notebook

You must draw/create your OWN data table. Give it an appropriate title. Remember units.
Choice Chambers Use a watch or timer to monitor time during data collection. Use FILTER PAPER to provide moisture or liquids to the environment (these invertebrates do not swim!) DO NOT PURPOSELY HARM the organisms.
It needs to be large enough at least a ½ page Start over if you mess up.

All of your headings and work should be in the sequence prescribed in the lab. Include the appropriate headings and subheadings. You must have your data table set up before you run your experiment. Decide whether you want to give the mealworms 2 or 3 choices for locations. All worms must be
