High school credits are a way to measure a student’s academic progress and achievement. They represent the successful completion of a specific course or subject. What is a CREDIT? Each high school credit is earned by completing a certain number of instructional hours and demonstrating proficiency in a particular subject area. Middle School grades are calculated using the system of averages. High School Grading vs. Middle School Example High School grades are NOT averaged. Each semester grade is independent. Example 8th Grade English: 9th Grade English: Semester 1 60 grade Semester 1 60 grade (NC) Semester 2 80 grade Semester 2 80 grade (CR) Yearly average 70 grade NO yearly average. **Student receives a 70 and passes the class** **In this example, the student failed semester one and the course must be made up.** Attention Student Athletes: NO PASS NO PLAY: To participate in any sport, students must pass 5 courses the preceding semester. Summer school is considered an extension of spring semester. *All athletes must be on track to graduate at the beginning of each school year to play.

What happens if you do not pass a class? MAKING UP FAILED CLASSES Put class on schedule next year Summer School On-Line with Fulton Virtual School or Georgia Virtual School When you fail a class and retake the class, the new grade does not replace the failing grade. All attempted classes are shown on the High School transcript.

A general core academic course that any student can take. Depending on grades students can move to Honors or AP or Dual Enrollment level courses. FCS Instructional Levels AP courses are college level courses taught by HS Teachers. Students can earn college credit with a passing AP Exam score.* On-Level Advanced Placement (AP) *7 additional points are added to a final grade of 70 or above in approved Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate Programs (IB), and Dual Enrollment courses. DE courses are college level courses taught by college professors on the college campus or online. Credits earned in DE courses count as HS and college credits.* Honors courses are advanced core courses taught to students needing a more rigorous learning experience in a certain subject area.* Honors High School Coursework Dual Enrollment (DE) International Baccalaureate Programs (IB) IB is an internationally infused program. IB Programs are rigorous, can earn college credit, and earn IB Diploma. Offered at Alpharetta, Riverwood, Westlake, and Centennial.*

9th Lit, American Lit, and two additional Language Arts classes are required to graduate from a Georgia High School. There are opportunities for advancing to higher levels based on grades and teacher recommendation. Below are examples of a typical 4 Year Plan for Language Arts. Math Graduation Requirements 4 Credits EOC: Algebra C&C Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, and one additional Math course are required to graduate from a Georgia High School. Below are examples of a typical 4 Year Plan for Math. Three credits of World Language and/or Career Technology and/or Fine Arts are required to graduate from a Georgia High School. World Language is typically a college admissions requirement. Students should take at least two years of World Language and consider additional years if planning to attend a competitive college. PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH

What’s Required & PE Elective Options To graduate from High School, all students are required to take Personal Fitness and Health. Each course is one semester long. Some FCS High Schools offer a Personal Fitness Waiver for students that participate in most GHSA sanctioned sports, Marching Band, and other school-based activities. Elective PE Classes Include: General PE 1, General PE 2, Intro to Lifetime Sports, Intro to Rec Games, Weight Training.

Personal Fitness & Health Graduation Requirements 1 Credit 9th Grade - Semester 1 9th Grade Lit Algebra I Biology Health French I Band 9th Grade - Semester 2 9th Grade Lit Algebra I Biology American Government French I Band 12th Grade - Semester 1 12th Grade Lit Pre-Calculus Earth Science Economics French 4 Band 12th Grade - Semester 2 12th Grade Lit Pre-Calculus Earth Science Personal Fitness French 4 Band Health and Personal Fitness are required to graduate from a Georgia High School. Both courses are semesterlong and worth .5 credit. Since they are semesterlong courses, students can take Health with American Government in 9th Grade and Personal Fitness with Economics in 12th Grade. Students can pay to take one or both courses during summer school. This is not necessary since they fit in your 4-year plan. If a student earns a Personal Fitness waiver, they gain the opportunity to take another .5 elective course.

ELECTIVES

Electives Graduation Requirements 4 Credits Four additional electives (student choice) are required to graduate from a Georgia High School. Electives could be additional PE, World Language, Career Pathway, Fine Arts, Core Subject Area, or Dual Enrollment courses. Dual Enrollment What is Dual Enrollment? Georgia’s Dual Enrollment Program allows students enrolled at a participating eligible public high school to receive funding for college courses. Students can take up to 30 credit hours of college courses that will earn the student credit towards both high school graduation and college. DE courses are college level courses taught by college professors on the college campus or online. Credits earned in DE courses count as HS and College credits. Dual Enrollment Participation & Basic Eligibility Students must apply and be accepted to their college. Student must meet with their HS Counselor to select DE courses. 9th Graders are not eligible for the Dual Enrollment program. 10th Graders have limited options for the Dual Enrollment program ( Conditional Eligibility). 11th- 12th Graders are eligible to apply for the Dual Enrollment Program.
