“Step with care and great tact, and remember life’s a great balancing act.” - Dr. Seuss This quote relates to food stamp fraud in the sense that making decisions and taking action is what is going to help foresee that the future will be better, only us the people can decide whether to speak up and help make changes or keep quiet not caring and later struggle economically.

How does food stamp fraud happen? People who are part of the benefits program can exchange their card for cash. Buy something simple such as a packet of gum to extract cash from their card. During the application process, information given is twisted in order to receive more money.

How can fraud be a problem? Roughly 15.5 percent of our taxes goes to the Supplement Nutrition program. Tax payers pay more money losing money over time People trade their food stamps for cash to buy things such as drugs or alcohol later leading to addictions and possibly overdose. The economy can possibly downfall leading to an economical problem because people lie on the application to receive more and more money.

What can be done to prevent fraud? The government are the ones who manage anything that has to do with welfare, food stamps, and any other type of benefits program but if we the people speak out and take action, we can influence the changes within the SNAP program in order for fraud to no longer occur.

Things that can be done and/or change: During the application process, the person’s social security should be ran in order to know their background to see their income, living status, and other things such as if they have kids and family. Picture ID on the card Monitoring the account by Statements of what the card is being used for Home checks More rules to be enforced in order for people to qualify.

Remember that actions speak louder than words, so reach out to the USDA and help make changes to the Food Stamp Program in order for fraud to no longer occur.
