What Does a Dental Hygienist Do? Patient Assessment of physical and oral health. Educate the patient about the state of their oral health and it’s relationship to physical health. Expose the patient’s radiographs. Intraoral imaging. Intra & Extra oral cancer exam. Clean the patient’s teeth. Non-surgical periodontal therapy. Many other things .

CODA/ADA The program in dental hygiene is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of “approval without reporting requirements”. Pre-requisite Courses CHEM 1405 Introduction to Chemistry or CHEM 1411 General Chemistry I ENGL 1301 Composition & Rhetoric I SOCI 1301 Principles of Sociology BIOL 2401 Anatomy & Physiology I To be considered for admission for the Fall these 4 courses must be completed by December 31. 5 Year Rule for Biology Courses BIOL 2401 Anatomy & Physiology 1 BIOL 2402 Anatomy & Physiology 2 BIOL 2420 Medical Microbiology These courses must have been completed no more than 5 years prior to application. See Biology Refresher Information (next slide)

Biology Refresher Information If any of your required BIOL courses are older than 5 years, the following are your options to refresh them: BIOL 2401 1) take the credit class again (BIOL 2401) and make a minimum grade of C 2) take BIOL 2404 and make a minimum grade of C to refresh both BIOL 2401 & 2402 (if both were taken more than 5 years ago)* 3) take the approved Continuing Education course at one of the Lone Star College System campuses for A & P I* (CSCIT 2100701 or SCITC 2100701) BIOL 2402 1) take the credit class again (BIOL 2402) and make a minimum grade of C 2) take BIOL 2404 and make a minimum grade of C to refresh both BIOL 2401 & 2402 (if both were taken more than 5 years ago) * 3) take the approved Continuing Education course at one of the Lone Star College System campuses for A & P II* (CSCIT 2100801 or SCITC 2100801) BIOL 2420 1) take the credit class again (BIOL 2420) and make a minimum grade of C 2) take the approved Continuing Education course at one of the Lone Star College System campuses for Microbiology* (CSCIT 2101301 or SCITC 2101301)

Observation Hours – WAIVED FOR 2022! 20 hours of Dental Hygiene Observations 20 hours of observing a dental hygienist ONLY, NOT a Dental Assistant, Dentist, Front Desk staff, or Sterilization Assistant Observation hours CANNOT be completed in the current Dental Office you are employed Observation Hours will be valid for 3 years Observation hours can be completed in multiple dental offices Observation hour verification form can be found on website Every day you observe needs to be on a separate line with the hours that you observed for that day. Becoming an Applicant Applicants must be 18 years or older at the time of application Apply online to be a student in the LSC System – www.lonestar.edu Submit all official transcripts from all colleges or universities outside of the LSCS to the LSCS admissions office on your campus Please do this before Jan. 1 – it takes time to evaluate transcripts. Math Information – Important!!! All applicants must satisfy the program math requirement by one of the following: 1. Complete MATH 0309/0310 with a grade of C or higher 2. Complete a college level math class with a grade of C or higher 3. Complete the TSIA Math exam and earn a score a 350 or higher (score is valid for 5 years) 4. Complete the TSIA2 Math exam and earn a score of 950 or higher or a TSIA2 Math Diagnostic score of 6 (score is valid for 5 years) 5. Submit SAT, ACT or STAAR scores that indicate college level in math (score is valid for 5 years)

Health Science Reasoning Test http://wwwappskc.lonestar.edu/cgi/dental/index.cfm Test will be available on the first day of application until the last Monday of the application period. Please visit the following website ( https://www.lonestar.edu/dental-hygiene-dept-kingwood.htm) to find available test dates. The test is 15.00 and you will need to pay for the exam at the link provided on the Dental Hygiene webpage. Test may only be taken once per application period The test is only available online. You will have from 7AM to 4PM (must be started by 3:00PM) on the test date you select to complete the exam. LSC-Kingwood will enter the score. Once you take the test, it may take up to 2 business days for the score to populate into the application – please be patient! Scores will only be accepted for the current application year – not from previous years.

What about repeated courses? If you take a course to improve your GPA, the highest grade will go into the GPA computation. If you take a course more than twice, .5 points will be deducted from your score sheet for each additional time that you take the course.

What Happens Next? Application scores are ranked Top 32 applicants will be invited to interview via email to my.lonestar account In the case of a tie at the 32nd spot, all applicants with that score will be extended an interview.

Background Checks & Drug Screening All acceptances are conditional upon a negative background check & drug screening. Any concern about background check needs to be evaluated by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. Information available @ www.tsbde.state.tx.us

Required Immunizations All of the following immunizations must be complete prior to entering the Dental Hygiene Program: Hepatitis B Vaccine (3 series) Varicella TDaP (Adult tetanus, diptheria, pertussis) Neg. TB Testing MMR Meningitis (Age 22 or under, new to LSCS - Texas Department of Health requires this.)

Patients for Clinical Experience Students are required to recruit patients Patients can be family, friends, people in the community The program does not guarantee patients.

BS Degree Online with TWU Students can dual enroll with TWU if they meet the TWU requirements- GPA 3.0- and accepted into the LSC-K dental hygiene program Students would be taking LSC-K dental hygiene courses at the same time with TWU dental hygiene courses. The degree plan is different from LSC-K degree plan. Cost for TWU would be paid through TWU, for any classes taken through TWU BS Degree plan would be through TWU; AAS through LSC-K TWU courses are online

Dual Degree Program Total of 120 hours Up to 90 hours transferred from LSC-K 30 hours must be completed at TWU Must be core complete from either LSC or TWU (can use TWU courses to complete core curriculum as long as not a course needed for the AAS at LSC-K)
