Catastrophe Response Console Dennis Shasha Guangwei Dai Xing Xia shasha, guangwei, [email protected] Computer Scicence Dept, NYU
Goal: What Console Does Locate Victims – Where, amount, status. Direct Ambulances – Where to pick up victims, how to get there. Track Rescue workers – Update their own positions to the server, get instructions from the server. Monitor Transportation Network – Road conditions: blocked, broken, or clear.
Technology Involved Wireless network GPS GIS Dynamic routing Distributed system
Wireless Network Protocols – Bluetooth – Wi-Fi (better for us) 802.11b for Wi-Fi – Theoretical speed: 11Mbps – Range: up to several hundred meters, but affected by the environment in which it is used. – Radio Frequency: 2.4G Hz
Dynamic Routing Find the optimal, safe routes in a changing transportation network Goals – Determine which ambulances should pick up which victims. – Guide ambulances to avoid road breaks in real time. – Give evacuation instructions to ambulatory victims
Distributed System Why needed? – Fault tolerance – Route computation is time consuming. Implementation – Update all; query any one. – Each route is only computed at one server, but all updates will go to all servers.
How do they Work Together Wireless network GIS Distributed Dynamic Routing System Vehicles and people equipped with Cell phones, palms and GPS.
Upper Bound on Costs Wireless Access Points – Manhattan land area: 23 square miles. – Estimated total cost: 300 * 50 15,000. Cellular phones, palms with wireless service or modem ( 300) and GPS ( 100) – Police officers in NYPD: about 39,000 – Fire fighters in NYFD: about 13,000 – Estimated total cost: around 20,000,000 Servers – Dell PowerEdge 6600: 12,500 – Total Cost: around 250,000 (20 servers)
Information by Wireless Communication Victim information is entered at server side with a speed of, say, 100 victim requests per minute. Number of rescue workers and police people, each one communicates 1k bytes per minute. – Mostly update position – Occasionally the server pushes new instruction down One road break per minute.
Demo on PC – 1 Ambulances are on their way to patients.
Demo on PC - 2 Some roads break, some ambulances change their routes accordingly.
Demo on Palm (Underway) Responding to queries from rescue workers of the form: – What should I do next? – How do I get from here to X? – Which victim is nearest me?
