Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 CDL became law in 1992

Class of license Class A - Includes vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more provided the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the trailer is more than 10,000 pounds. Example: Tractor Trailers, trailer buses. Class B- This includes vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more. If towing a vehicle, the GVWR of the towed unit must be 10,000 pounds or less Class C- Operate single vehicles of 26,000 pounds or less when the operator plans to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is transporting material that has been designated as hazardous.

Getting an NJ CDL Be a US Citizen or a non-US Citizen with lawful permanent resident status. Be at least 18 years old.** Have a basic; New Jersey driver's license(Class D). Have at least 20/40 vision in each eye with or without glasses. Be able to recognize red, green, and amber colors. Submit medical examiner certificate Strongly suggest submitting a DOE fingerprint background check.*** June 7, 2022

Application Process Study in advance by reading the CDL Manual. Get your examination test receipt at a NJMVC licensing agency. Make an appointment for a CDL Permit. Complete the Application for Commercial Driver License Bring your 6 Points of ID, including your social security card, proof of address, and proof of legal presence in the US. Be prepared to pay the 125 commercial examination test receipt fee (non-refundable) by credit card, check, money order, or cash. June 6, 2022

Application Process Take your CDL knowledge test. If you are not prepared to take your test at the time you get your Examination Test Receipt, you must make an appointment for the test. EFFECTIVE 2/7/22: If you are applying for a passenger or school bus endorsement, you must complete the required Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry prior to taking your knowledge test.** After passing your CDL knowledge test(s), you will be issued your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP). At this time, you may schedule your skills test.* June 7, 2022

CDL Skills Test EFFECTIVE 2/7/22: Prior to taking your skills test for your CDL or any endorsements, you must complete Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. You must have an appointment to take your skills test. Unless waived, CLP holders must wait a minimum of 14 days before taking the skills test. After passing your skills test, you will be issued your CDL. June 6, 2022

FMCSA’s Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations set the baseline for training requirements for entry-level drivers. This applies to those seeking to: Obtain a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time; Upgrade an existing Class B CDL to a Class A CDL; or Obtain a school bus (S), passenger (P), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement for the first time. The ELDT regulations and the Training Provider Registry were mandated under the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). The ELDT final rule was based, in part, on consensus recommendations from the Agency’s Entry-Level Driver Training Advisory Committee (ELDTAC), a negotiated rulemaking committee that held a series of meetings in 2015.
