What is Ubiquitous LBS? Most services are location based and not ubiquitous. However some aspects of services and some services themselves are becoming available everywhere in large regions. – e.g. It used to be quite hard to find good coffee and an accessible wireless internet connection, but this is thankfully changing. Andy Turner 10 minute presentation at OS-CGS Think Tank 2009-03-17, Nottingham, UK
Key research trends 1 Data, technology, security and academic interest Services focus is contemporary – Where are things here and now and where will they be in the foreseeable future? – To address this we need Data Information about – planned infrastructure – developments under way Some ideas/predictions about the revolutionary changes on the horizon. Andy Turner 10 minute presentation at OS-CGS Think Tank 2009-03-17, Nottingham, UK
Key research trends 2 Sensor web enablement and smart data collection – Mobile sensors – Deployment of motes and other means to record detailed data in a targeted fashion. Augmented Reality – Opaque screens placed in front of eyes provide additional information about surroundings and provide a new artistic medium Andy Turner 10 minute presentation at OS-CGS Think Tank 2009-03-17, Nottingham, UK
Key research trends 3 To unlock operational data for specific uses cases without compromising security – Can it be done and can we convince the data guardians and policy makers/those in power to configure it? Historical – What were the location based constraints of the past and how do we explain the evolution of networks and communities/organisations – The importance of understanding how we have evolved should not be understated. Andy Turner 10 minute presentation at OS-CGS Think Tank 2009-03-17, Nottingham, UK
Key applications 1 Mass Market Drivers – Social Networking/Community Many people want to know where there friends are and broadcast their location and have the services they want available when they want them. Not everyone is going to want a form of waiter service everywhere, but there has existed for some time a desire to be connected to the internet everywhere and to send and receive significant bandwidth data. Many people like recording minutia of their lives as tagged up visuals and tweets. Cameras increasingly have location and orientation built in and with developments in pattern recognition technology and 3D modelling allow spatially 3D and temporal views of large regions possible from many angles. Andy Turner 10 minute presentation at OS-CGS Think Tank 2009-03-17, Nottingham, UK
Key applications 2 Entertainment/Virtual ImmersiveAugmented Environments – Sit where you like (e.g. at home) as if you were in a football stadium. – Move about as you like playing a multiplayer game with real and/or virtual players. – Sex Andy Turner 10 minute presentation at OS-CGS Think Tank 2009-03-17, Nottingham, UK
Key applications 3 Road Safety – Informing drivers and others about danger and modifying the environmental conditions to mitigate risk Open Government – Increasing (expert) public participation in the decision making process. Planning – Hydrological implication for proposed physical infrastructure – GEOVISTA Knowing where all the utility infrastructure is underground without having to perform a primary survey Andy Turner 10 minute presentation at OS-CGS Think Tank 2009-03-17, Nottingham, UK
Positioning issues 1 To have things everywhere there needs to be a location based infrastructure to support it. In data capture, accuracy and precision issues abound – Where (and from where) – When (bounded) – What (scaled) Integration with additional information can improve positional accuracy Andy Turner 10 minute presentation at OS-CGS Think Tank 2009-03-17, Nottingham, UK
Positioning issues 2 Internet everywhere Esmond, M.C., (2007) Ubiquitous Positioning Technologies and LBS. http://www.location.net.in/magazin e/2007/july-august/36 1.htm (accessed 2009-03-16). Andy Turner 10 minute presentation at OS-CGS Think Tank 2009-03-17, Nottingham, UK
Next Generation Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) INSPIRE and data sharing for larger regions Key collaboration An underpinning for global harmony? Andy Turner 10 minute presentation at OS-CGS Think Tank 2009-03-17, Nottingham, UK
